Position: Per Diem Substitute Chef & Evening Coordinator

Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK) seeks a dedicated and passionate Substitute Chef and Evening Coordinator who will be responsible for overseeing the preparation of evening meals and coordination of volunteers on a per diem basis.  The successful candidate will have experience working in a commercial kitchen and have the appropriate supervisory skills, preferably in a volunteer and social services setting.
DESK serves people who are experiencing homelessness or living in poverty by providing food assistance and services that promote health, community, and equity.  Since 1987, DESK has offered evening meals and a weekly food pantry to the Greater New Haven community.
The Substitute Chef and Evening Coordinator (“Sub-Chef”) will work on a per diem basis, as needed, filling in for the Program Manager and other staff on occasional holidays, vacations, and some short-notice situations.  As a per-diem position, the successful candidate will only work according to his/her own availability.
  • Kitchen Operations – The Sub-Chef oversees all operations within the kitchen, ensuring proper use of all equipment.
  • Volunteer Supervision – The Sub-Chef supervises all volunteers onsite, up to 14 people a time.
  • Dinner Preparation – The Sub-Chef coordinates dinner preparation and dining room setup.
  • Dinner Service – The Sub-Chef oversees the dinner service according to predetermined guidelines.
  • Client Relations – The Sub-Chef welcomes all clients, and addresses any issues that arise during dinner.
Candidates applying to this position should be enthusiastic about providing much-needed services to the target population.  While the successful candidate need not have extensive experience working with people who are experiencing homelessness or living in poverty, s/he should be compassionate and empathetic, with good interpersonal skills.  The following qualities will be sought in candidates who apply for this position:

 

  • 2+ years experience in a commercial kitchen
  • Strong leadership & communication skills
  • Very good social/“people” skills
  • High school degree or equivalent
  • Ability to work well under stress
  • Strong management skills
  • Creative thinking and problem solving
  • Valid driver’s license
As a per-diem position, wages will be set at an agreed-upon, fixed, hourly rate.  The Sub-Chef position does not include any fringe benefits.
