Debbie, Her Story & The Life She Once Had

Linda Carbone Stories

DESK sees people from many walks of life. The stories that touch my life the most are from our guests who live on the street – those who have their only possessions with them in a single plastic bag. One of these people is “Debbie”. When asked about her story, Debbie says that she has three children – she hasn’t seen them in quite a while but in her meager possessions, she holds on tight to a picture of her three young children.

She tells of having a life with an apartment, a husband and her three children. Unfortunately, her marriage turned sour and her husband left her and the children. She had a minimum wage job which did not provide enough to afford the apartment and food for her and her children. She says it was not long before they were living in a car – she ended up giving up her children in order to provide them with a safer and more certain life. Debbie says once her children left her life, so did her will to carry on with a life that would keep her off the street. ‘What was the point?’…she did not have her children.

Debbie comes to DESK for her meal nearly every night. She says it allows her to get warm for a bit and get some much needed food. Debbie is a guest that tends to haunt me – she has a smile that touches her lips but never quite reaches her eyes – her eyes always remain sad. I am thankful that we are able to provide that warmth, a hug and a hot plate of food to bring her some comfort in her day. We can only hope that she will one day be reunited with her children.

Fortunately for our guests, we exist because of volunteers and donors like you. At a time of the year when we see much fewer donations that we do at year end, there are opportunities for us to stretch every dollar given even further. On May 3rd and 4th, the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven will hold The Great Give, a fundraising event that will provide matching funds and prizes for donations that are designated for the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen. It’s my honor to ask you to join me in making a contribution through The Great Give so that we can continue to serve those who are less fortunate.

Update May 9, 2015

Thanks to everyone who made The Great Give a super success this year. With your help, we were able to raise $3,825.00 plus we won a Golden Ticket prize of $500. Soon, we will find out how much we will receive in matching funds as well. In case you did not get a chance to give to DESK during The Great Give and are interested in making a contribution, you can do so by clicking here.
