Thanks and Recognition
In Memory of Dr. Reid
Overwhelming donations have recently been made to DESK in the memory of Dr. Gordon V.K. Reid. Dr. Reid, who passed away in April, will always be remembered by DESK and its guests. Dr. Reid and his wife, Betsy, helped serve evening meals prepared by the North Haven Congregational Church for many years. As a memorial, DESK is dedicating a portion of the new pantry shelving to Dr. Reid. A commemorative faceplate will be installed after the renovations are completed.
New Haven Firemen’s Benevolent Association
This April, DESK received a wonderful donation from the New Haven Firemen’s Benevolent Association. DESK Directors Jeanne and Diana went to the New Haven Fire Department Headquarters to accept the donation and to receive a tour of the a firehouse from Officer Black. DESK would like to say a big thanks to our firefighters for their courageous service to the community. We love Squad #1!
Hips for Hunger by the Yale Belly Dance Society
The Yale Belly Dancers event, “Hips for Hunger,” raised over $1,000.00 on behalf of DESK. Members of the Yale Belly Dance Society also plan to serve at evening meals this summer. Thank you so much for all your support.

Upcoming Events
Summer Toast 2008
Wednesday, June 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Yale Peabody Museum’s Great Hall of Dinosaurs
107 Whitney Ave (New Haven)
Tickets at the door for $40 per person
Free parking in Peabody Museum lot
At the Summer Toast 2008, DESK will honor the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and the Ladies’ Home Missionary Society. Come support your local soup kitchen and pantry while enjoying wine, music, and the opportunity to tour the exhibitions of the Yale Peabody Museum.
The Great Hall of Dinosaurs is the centerpiece of the Yale Peabody Museum. Featuring skeletons from the museum’s world-renowned paleontology collections, it is also home to Rudolph Zallinger’s famous mural, “The Age of Reptiles.”
“Las Artes de México” is the Yale Peabody Museum’s latest traveling exhibition, celebrating the rich and diverse artistic traditions of Mexico. Developed by the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Las Artes de México examines over 3,500 years of art and culture and of tradition and change across the broad spectrum of Mexican life, from the ancient worlds of the Mayans and Aztecs to the 20th-century works of Miguel Covarrubias and Diego Rivera. Included are artifacts from over a dozen pre-Columbian cultures that reveal a world of ceremony and celebration, of ritual warfare and the veneration of the dead, along with a selection of material from the Peabody’s own collections.
Music for the Summer Toast will be specially provided by Jay Gitlin and Chris Coulter of the Bales-Gitlin Band. Hors d’oeuvres will be handcrafted by DESK Chef Jeanne May. There will be free parking in the Peabody Museum lot.
Tickets will be available at the door for $40 per person. All proceeds directly benefit DESK. If you cannot attend but still wish to support DESK, donations may be sent to DESK at P.O. Box 1478 / New Haven, CT 06506.
This celebration has been generously sponsored by YHHAP (Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project) and the Yale Hunger Heroes.
Please see the calendar for dates, times, and locations of upcoming events.
Current Needs
Volunteers Now and Throughout the Summer
Summer is a great time to help at DESK; in the summer, the number of guests is very high, and at the same time, many volunteer groups and schools are on vacation. Summer is therefore a great time for families and other sorts of groups to get involved with DESK.
DESK desperately needs volunteer groups or individuals at the kitchen and pantry at the following times every week:
Sundays 12:30 to 4:30
Mondays 11:00 to 4:00
Tuesdays 1:00 to 4:30
Wednesdays 11:00 to 4:00
Thursdays 1:00 to 4:30
If you have a small group, you may be interested in running the Food Pantry, Wednesday, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Volunteering during any of these times takes place at DESK’s central kitchen and pantry, 311 Temple Street (New Haven). To be scheduled, or for more information, please email JeanneMarieMay@aol.com.
Desk Herb Garden
Spring is just around the corner, and this spring DESK will attempt to plant an herb garden somewhere on the grounds of the Center Church parish house. Chef Jeanne uses fresh herbs daily in most of her cooking, and growing our own herbs would be a big help.
For the gardeners among you who would like to donate herb seeds, please bring them to the central kitchen by mid-April. Jeanne especially recommends basil, parsley, chives, and oregano, which are hearty in the soil and useful in the kitchen. The best times for drop off are Sunday through Thursday, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Planting your own garden this spring?
If so, please consider planting an extra row of vegetables or herbs for DESK! Chef Jeanne cooks with fresh produce every day, so extra vegetables and herbs are welcome in the DESK kitchen at any time of the year. By the way, this would make a great summer family project!
Pantry and Kitchen
DESK is currently in desperate need of the following items:
yams or sweet potatoes, fresh or in family-size cans
adobo
salt
pepper
crushed red pepper
whole frozen turkeys
milk
butter
eggs
parsley
sage
white vinegar
chili powder
garlic powder
onion powder
dry mustard
mayonnaise
basil
oregano
brown sugar (!)
We also welcome donations of hotel-size hygiene items (e.g. soap, shampoo, conditioner).
