Twentieth Anniversary Celebration
Please join us to celebrate the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen’s Twentieth Anniversary!
The event, which is sponsored by Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project in conjunction with the Yale Hunger Heroes, will take place at the Great Hall of Dinosaurs in the Yale Peabody Museum (107 Whitney Ave, New Haven) from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27.
New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr., will deliver the keynote address, and guests will enjoy wine, music, food, and entertainment. D.E.S.K. will specifically be honoring Julie Savin, from the City of New Haven Livable City Initiative, and Alderman Ed Mattison. Guests will enjoy:
The Great Hall of Dinosaurs—The Great Hall of Dinosaurs is the centerpiece of the Yale Peabody Museum. Featuring skeletons from the Museum’s world-renowned paleontology collections, it is also home to Rudolph Zallinger’s famous mural The Age of Reptiles.
Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2006 International exhibit—The Yale Peabody Museum’s newest exhibition, developed by the Natural History Museum in London, features 94 stunning images of animals, plants and landscapes that will be exhibited as striking backlit transparencies. Founded in 1964, this is the largest wildlife photography competition in the world, with 20,000 entries from 60 countries, the best of which are seen annually at venues worldwide. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the magnificent and memorable photographs in Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2006 at the Yale Peabody Museum.
Music by Jay Gitlin and Chris Coulter of the Bales-Gitlin Band, wine provided by the Amity Wine & Spirit Co., and hors d’oeuvres from Emily’s Catering Group.
Tickets will be $50 at the door, the proceeds of which will go directly to D.E.S.K. Don’t forget to take advantage of free parking in the Peabody Museum parking lot!
Quick Notes
Renovation of Central Kitchen
The central kitchen will once again be in fully operational by May 25th. D.E.S.K. would like to thank Julie Savin (Livable City Initiative, City of New Haven), John Anderson (Chef Equipment Co.), and Fred Johnson (architect) for all their guidance and support throughout the entire project. Without their help, this renovation would not have been possible!
D.E.S.K. would like to extend a special thanks to United Church for graciously granting the use of its kitchen throughout the lengthy renovation.
D.E.S.K.’s busiest season is here!
The spring and summer months are always the busiest for D.E.S.K.—we serve between 150 and 300 meals each night! Moreover, requests for our weekly pantry soar in the summer. Consequently, D.E.S.K. is seeking volunteers for the summer months. See the “Volunteer Opportunities” section below to volunteer!
Summer Food Drives
Is your group looking for something to do this summer? Help D.E.S.K. keep its pantry stocked this summer by conducting a food drive! It's easy: we will help you organize the event, and we will even pick up the food. Food drives are especially suitable for employee community service and small business groups.
