Quick Notes
New Members of the Board of Directors
The following individuals have recently been added to D.E.S.K.’s Board of Directors: Debra Hauser, Nicole Aaronson, and Octavious McAuley. Debra Hauser served as the chairperson of D.E.S.K.’s highly successful Toast on the Terrace this summer, and she is spotlighted on our website this month. Nicole Aaronson is a Yale undergraduate who will be representing her peers on the D.E.S.K. Board and coordinating the undergraduate volunteers for evening meals on Fridays and Sundays during the next school year. She is also the president of the new Yale-D.E.S.K. joint initiative, Yale Hunger Heroes. For information about the Yale Hunger Heroes, contact nicole.aaronson@yale.edu. Octavious McCauley, our newest D.E.S.K. board member, owns and operates PRO STYLE, a unisex hair salon on State Street in New Haven. D.E.S.K. hopes to tap his talents for projects related to small business.
New Members of the Executive Committee
The following newly-elected members of the Executive Committee of D.E.S.K.’s Board of Directors will all serve a one-year term in their respective positions: Julia Prest, Ph.D. (president), Alex Wellek (vice president), William G. Hyde (treasurer), and Blanche Baldwin (member-at-large). Erin Shaffer will continue her tenure as the board’s secretary.
Calling All Volunteers!!
D.E.S.K. is in great need of summer help at all times from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.! If you can help in any way, D.E.S.K. needs you! Email Jeanne for more information.
Visit D.E.S.K.
Are you interested in seeing what goes on at D.E.S.K.? Stop by 311 Temple Street on the second or fourth Thursday of any month around 5:45 p.m! There you can grab an apron and help out or just visit with the guests. Volunteer groups are already scheduled at these times, but we like people to see where our main operations are.
Yale Undergraduates and Hunger Heroes
All Yale Undergraduates interested in helping D.E.S.K. on Fridays and Sundays during the academic year should email nicole.aaronson@yale.edu, and this fall, join Hunger Heroes to fight hunger right in Yale’s neighborhood! Yalies interested in summer volunteer opportunities should email Jeanne.
Thanks & Recognition
Toast on the Terrace
D.E.S.K.’s Toast on the Terrace, honoring Susan Hulsman Bingham, went very well! Over $4,000 was raised to help fund D.E.S.K.’s continuing operations. Everyone enjoyed seeing Tim and Sue Bingham, too! Both officially resigned from D.E.S.K.’s Board of Directors, but they will be staying with us in an Emeritus status. It is the pleasure of all of us here at D.E.S.K. to inaugurate the first-annual “Bingham Award” in honor of Tim and Sue Bingham. The award will be given to Yale undergraduates starting in September of 2006 in recognition of outstanding contributions to and support of D.E.S.K.
The First Annual Tim and Sue Bingham Award
In 2006, the Bingham Award will be given to Brendan Kearney (Ezra Stiles 2006) and Nicole Aaronson (Ezra Stiles 2007). Stay tuned for information about the Master’s Tea award ceremony in September. Congratulations to both recipients! Brendan and Nicole have been making invaluable contributions for several years toward continuing D.E.S.K.’s services on Friday and Sunday nights.
St. Martin de Porres Academy
Many thanks to the students of St. Martin de Porres Academy for helping with numerous tasks this month. A large group of fifth and sixth graders headed by Allison Rivera, Jim Messina, and Jay Bowes spent an afternoon bagging groceries, produce, and desserts for the weekly pantry; making sandwiches for the daily bag lunch program; and stocking pantry shelves. You kids rock! St. Martin’s is a free middle school in Hamden that teaches its students to give back to the community through service and to fulfill Jesus' call to be peacemakers. For more information, contact smpa@sbcglobal.net.
The Foote School
Thank you so much to the students from the Foote School who have served D.E.S.K.’s meals on Wednesday evenings at United Church in New Haven for many years—they have never missed a meal during the school year. Thank you also to Margaret and Miss Valentine, who help transport and supervise the students every Wednesday.
A special thanks also to the third graders of the Foote School who decided to raise money for D.E.S.K., among other New Haven organizations, by making and selling soup, jam, chutney, and pizza to members of the Foote community. The third graders sent D.E.S.K. a check for $500! Thank you also to Deborah Rhoads, a third grade teacher at the Foote School.
