Soup Night Success!

The Event

On April 2, D.E.S.K. had its 10 th Annual Soup Night at the Unitarian Society in Hamden. The weather was perfect and the evening was filled with music, food, and friends of D.E.S.K.

June Schaffer (ICM) for helping coordinate with the Unitarian Society

Students of Quinnipiac College for setting up beforehand, serving during the program, and cleaning up afterward

New Haven County Bar Association Public Service Committee members for serving soup and beverages to our Soup Night guests

Eric Meridiano and friends for livening the evening with wonderful Jazz music

Clark’s Dairy , Archie Moore’s Bar & Restaurant , The Graduate Club , Stillwater American Bistro , and Claire’s Corner Copia for donating delicious soups

The D.E.S.K. Board for bringing appetizers and cheeses

The Soup Night Honored…

Scott McLean , D.E.S.K. Board member (and member of First and Summerfield United Methodist Church), for his many years of dedicated service to D.E.S.K.

Members of First and Summerfield United Methodist Church for serving D.E.S.K.’s Tuesday evening meals at their church for many years

North Haven Congregational Church for serving D.E.S.K. meals on the first and third Thursdays of every month for many years

Rodney Taylor , Gina Someone , Henry Ford , and Charles Kaiser , four D.E.S.K. guests, for their daily, dedicated service to D.E.S.K.

Finally, D.E.S.K. would like to extend a special word of thanks to Jeanne Marie May and Kevin Johnson for all of the effort they contributed to this event.

Opportunities

Summer Volunteering

Summer is just around the corner, and D.E.S.K. will need summer volunteers to help both during the day and into evening. Now is the time to email Jeanne to reserve a date t o volunteer at D.E.S.K. with your youth group or family .

New Organization—Hunger Heroes

“Yale Hunger Heroes” is a new undergraduate group under the Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project that will work in collaboration with D.E.S.K. beginning in the fall of 2006. Yale undergraduates can help support D.E.S.K. and feed the hungry in New Haven by joining this new group, and as Hunger Heroes, undergraduates will have the opportunity to serve meals Friday and/or Sunday nights on campus. Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project Fast

The YHHAP “Hunger Awareness Week” (including the fast) is quickly approaching! The event will take place from April 17 th to April 21 st , and Yale Undergraduates will be able to volunteer at D.E.S.K.’s food pantry ( 311 Temple Street ) on Wednesday, April 19 th , from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. At the pantry, the undergraduates will organize and distribute food to New Haven's homeless. If you want to help out with these activities, please e-mail Jane Levy (jane.levy@yale.edu) or Zachary Zwillinger (zachary.zwillinger@yale.edu).

Congratulations!

Debra Hauser, Ph.D. and Nicole Aaronson are now members of the D.E.S.K. Board of Directors. Debra will be chairing the “Toast on the Terrace” event in June, and Nicole is currently the Yale undergraduate coordinator of Sunday meals at Silfka Center. Nicole is also the president of the new “Hunger Heroes” initiative. D.E.S.K. is excited to have these newcomers on the Board!

February & March

Over the months of February and March, over 300 individuals volunteered at D.E.S.K. Thank you to everyone who helps feed the community!
